What is an SR-22?
An SR-22 (CFR) is an official document required by a state to confirm that a driver is sustaining required car insurance liability coverage. Each state’s SR-22 requirements and forms are different, and one state’s SR-22 does not transfer to another state; also, a SS-22 does not “disappear” when the driver moves out of state as the individual must continue to meet that state’s requirements or face further legal consequences. Individuals with SR-22s usually need this document to reinstate their license or to drive on a restricted license because of a driving infraction such as a DUI or driving without minimum liability insurance. As part of the requirements to be able to drive, the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles office notifies the driver that he or she needs an SR-22 form from an insurance company before they can issue their license.
An SR-22 is not an insurance policy; it is a document from the drivers’ insurance company showing proof of financial responsibility. Technically, it is a form that the insurance company fills out stating that the driver does have active car insurance cover. Insurance companies also need the documentation when taking out new policies for customers. Having an SR-22 does change the premium amount required by those policyholders, making their insurance more expensive because they are, statistically, riskier drivers to insure.
